Boston Gazette (second) is first published.

April 7, 1755

It is published by Benjamin Edes and John Gill from a shop near today’s 35 Court Street [17][7 State St.]. By 1770, it is estimated that 7/8ths of Boston residents read the newspaper. Isaiah Thomas later writes, “No paper on the continent took a more active part in defence of the country, or more ably supported its rights, than the Boston Gazette.” Edes flees Boston in 1775, but continues to publish the paper until September 17, 1798 [1801-LePore]. Gill remains in Boston and is jailed for two months. After the British evacuation, he publishes the Continental Journal until his death in 1785.
